Food & Nutrition Services is responsible for the preparation and service of Breakfast and/or Lunch to the students at Chippewa Valley Schools.

Michigan School Meals will be the policy for the 2024-2025 School Year. The Michigan government has funded the school meals for Michigan Public School students that are not covered by the Federal Reimbursements. This means all students will receive one breakfast and one lunch at no cost. Michigan School Meals is a Michigan initiative; however, all USDA guidelines and regulations are still in effect. This includes still requiring families to fill out an Education Benefits Form. For instructions to help fill out the form click here

While the Education Benefit form helps with student eligibility for school meals and summer EBT qualifications, it is more important for other school programs. If the number of applications decline, funding for some programs can be lost since the overall funding for schools is based on the number of Education Benefits Forms turned back into Food Service.

To see if your family qualifies for additional benefits, please fill out a free/reduced application at chippewavalley.familyportal.cloud. Applications are good for one school year and should be completed each year unless you are notified that your child qualifies for free/reduced meal benefits for the current school year.

One thing that will be new this year is the Community Eligibility Provision. This is a Federal Program in which a school or a group of schools have met a certain percentage and are eligible for free meals based on the poverty level of the community.

Attention Debit Users leaving the district: Upon departing the district, if you have remaining funds on your Lunch account, you may fill out the
Debit Users Refund Form, to collect those funds.

Breakfast is Free for all students this 24-25 school year!

Elementary Grab & GO! Breakfast Menu Fall 24-25

Breakfast is served daily and offered to all students at:
CVHS, DHS, Algonquin, Iroquois, Seneca, Wyandot, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Clinton Valley, Erie, Fox, Huron, Miami, Mohawk, Ojibwa, Ottawa, Sequoyah and Shawnee. (check your school for times.) 

*Students receiving free/reduced meal benefits are not identified in the service line. Our Meal Magic software protects the identity and privacy of all students.  Every student uses the same lines and the computer screen does not indicate which students are free or reduced-price.*

Each student has an automatic meal account that is assigned to them when they enroll at the district.  This meal account together with the balance follows the student as they move throughout the district from elementary to middle to high school.  Students that qualify for free or reduced will also have an account that protects the identity and privacy of students receiving meal benefits. 

There are three options for parents to put money on their student’s account:

  • On-Line Deposit -You may use the internet to deposit money at the following secure site: chippewavalley.familyportal.cloud.
  • Cash—you may send cash in with your student. Cash sent in will be for deposit only. All remaining funds will be deposited on the student's account.  For elementary, please put cash in envelope with your child’s name on the envelope.  Secondary students can give cash directly to cashier at lunch time. 
  • Check—Make check payable to Chippewa Valley Schools Food Service.  Please put your child’s name on bottom of check. (There is a $20.00 fee for insufficient funds).

Lunch Account Balances

As of June 1, 2022, SendMoneyToSchool.com has moved to FamilyPortal.cloud. If you previously had an account set up on SendMoneyToSchool.com, please create a new account using the same email address. All account information will migrate over to FamilyPortal.cloud. If you have not yet had an account, you will need to create a new account on FamilyPortal.cloud. Tutorial videos can be found on the Family Portal website.

How to check student balance?   Parents can go to www.familyportal.cloud and set up an online account at no charge.  You will need your student’s 10 digit ID number for the first log in. Your child's student ID number may be obtained from their school's main office. 

If you currently use Family Portal to deposit money for your child, you can choose to subscribe to Low-Balance emails. Reminders are sent whenever balances fall below the notification level that you set! Be sure to look for this new feature!

Applying for Free and Reduced Price School Meals

To see if you qualify for additional benefits, you may complete a free/reduced meal application at chippewavalley.familyportal.cloud or by completing a paper application located in the main office of your school building. 

Schools applications are available in the main office at each building. However, you may apply for school meals at any time throughout the school year by submitting a household application directly to your school. Your school will provide you with an application upon request.

If you are earning at or below current Income Eligibility Guidelines, we encourage you to contact your school to fill out a school meal application. The school or local education agency will process your application and issue an eligibility determination.

If you are receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, your child automatically qualifies for free school meals. Please contact your school to determine if you need to fill out an application.

You should know...

If you are eligible for unemployment compensation, you might also be eligible for free or reduced price school meals. With the cooperation of the Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration, we are reaching out to vulnerable households affected by current economic conditions. State Workforce Agency Administrators have been asked to inform those seeking unemployment benefits about the availability of free and reduced price school meals.

This summer, Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer (Summer EBT) will be available to families with eligible school-age children to purchase groceries in the summer months. This program is similar to the USDA's Supplemental Nutrition Progran (SNAP). 

Although meals are free for all students this school year, not all students will be eligible for Summer EBT benefits. Families must complete an Electronic Benefits Form (EBF) online or currently be approved for these benefits by June 30,2024.

In accordance with the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act, Chippewa Valley Food Service is offering more whole grains, lower-sodium products & a wider variety of fruits and vegetables. Our goal is to produce delicious & healthy balanced meals that everyone can enjoy!

In an effort to help you better understand the changes to our menus, here is a summary of the requirements mandated by the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010:

Students must select a minimum of ½ cup fruit at breakfast. This can be in the form of fresh, frozen, canned or juice.

All grains at breakfast & lunch are required to be whole-grain rich. This includes pasta, pizza crust, breads & breading.

Age group specific weekly weighted average sodium targets for breakfast and lunch

  • K-5 Breakfast ≤540 mg K-5 Lunch ≤1230 mg
  • 6-8 Breakfast ≤600 mg 6-8 Lunch ≤1360 mg
  •  9-12 Breakfast ≤640 mg 9-12 Lunch ≤ 1420 mg

Age group specific weekly weighted average calorie ranges for breakfast and lunch

  • K-5 Breakfast: 350-500 K-5 Lunch:  550-650
  • 6-8 Breakfast: 400-550 6-8 Lunch: 600-700
  • 9-12 Breakfast: 450-600 9-12 Lunch: 750-850 


Smart Snacks in Schools 

Chippewa Valley Food Service features healthier snacks in order to comply with the Smarter Snacks in Schools legislation. We encourage you to try some of the delicious choices we have to offer, including whole-grain cookies, baked chips & low-fat yogurts! The requirements are as follows:

  • Snack items ≤ 200 calories &  ≤ 230 mg of sodium
  • Snack items ≤ 35% of calories comes from total fat
  • Snack items ≤10% of calories comes from saturated fat
  • Snack items must contain zero grams of trans fat
  • 35% of a snack items weight can come from total sugar

All beverage items sold to students must meet the following:

  • Elementary schools may sell up to 8 ounce portions of milk and juice
  • Middle Schools may sell up to 12 ounces portions of milk and juice
  • High Schools standards limit the maximum container size to 12 ounces for lower calorie beverages and 20 ounces for calorie-free beverages

We take food allergies and student safety very seriously.
